Ironically, the Godolphin 2005 (being the last vintage ever made using the
Godolphin label) was “the best Wine I have ever made,” said Ben Glaetzer.
Genuinely one of the greatest wines in the world, the Godolphin is produced
using priceless 110 year old vines in the Barossa Valley which yield miniscule
amounts of hand-picked fruit. Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon, deep purple-red;
achieves lusciousness, length and intensity of flavour without resorting to
excessive alcohol. Great balance and mouth feel, very good length and

It was 1927 when Pasquale Mottura looked out over the vast stretches of

Words from Robert Parker who awarded this wine 93 points. The ’95 remains
one of Alexandre’s standout wines of that decade. Here, it has a haunting

before, essentially with more Pomerol character developing. There are touches
of blackberry, mint and cassis with a meaty element developing in the glass.
The palate has plenty of sweet red cherry and boysenberry on the entry, the
oak now completely absorbed and with a slightly unruly, almost Rioja-like finish!

From the vineyards one can see the town of San Sebastian and understand
the influence of the Atlantic Ocean on this vineyard site. Ignacio Ameztoi
is the seventh generation to carry on the tradition of making Txakolina in the
province of Getaria. Made from the indigenous grape variety of Hondarribi
Zurri the wine is fermented in stainless steel and bottled with residual carbonic
that gives the wine its natural spritz. From Bilbao to San Sebastian, Txakoli is
served in the Pinxtos bars poured with great panache from a great height
into small tumblers. The green-tinted liquid turns chalky-white, foams and
eventually settles, retaining a lively spritz.

Piquentum is the name of this incredible Croatian wine created by half
French half Croation producer Dimitri Brecevic. The grape is Malvasija,

It is aged in oak before being bottled and shipped. The resulting wine has an

The name signifies this wine is only released in ‘great’ years. It is
Fermented in oak casks and then aged for a further five years in the

Very traditional and delicate, allegedly this Monk in the 1700’s was the
creator of the first Champagne wines as we know them today. Tell that
to the Benedictine Monks in the Loire making sparkling wines in the 1500’s,
not forgetting the British Christopher Merret presenting a paper on sparkling wines in 1664. Dom Perignon did however invent the style of cork and wire
cage ‘muselet’, not quite so romantic. And of course the Brit’s came up
with the bottle to stop it exploding! He also sported a classic tonsure – mighty monkish.

Reported as not only the best Champagne in the world but also the most
expensive. This is the wine that an Oligarch paid $315,000 dollars on for a 30

Late harvested, when grapes are dry then aged for 12 months in
French and American oak and at least 8 months bottle ageing.
A deep intense wine with rich aromas of dark fruit, chocolate and coffee,
on the palate there is a beautiful sweetness which works perfectly with
flavours of marmalade and chocolate, silky tannins, concentrated dark
berry fruit and a warming complex finish. With its rich, sweet style and well
defined dark fruit this is the ideal accompaniment to rich chocolate desserts
but also worth trying with powerful cheeses where Port would be the obvious

NAPOLEON BONA PART FOUR 2019 PAARL 19% £34.00
Napoleon Bona Part Four is a sweet wine, produced from Muscat grapes,
very much in the classic Constantia style. The inspiration for the title comes
from the fact that Napoleon, during his five-year exile on Saint Helena found
solace in consuming a bottle of Constantia a day. Documents dated
October 1816 through to 30 June 1817, titled “Statement of the wines
supplied for General Bonaparte’s Establishment”, shows that the three-
monthly tally was around 90 bottles. The emperor kept this cache for his
exclusive enjoyment and is believed to have asked for a glass shortly before
he died. The wine comes from Nederberg, a very distinguished address for sweet
wines. The winemaker, Günter Brözel, who arrived from Germany in 1956,
dedicated himself to building up a broad spectrum of wines, made at a
remarkably high level of quality and consistency.

Ca dei Maghi is a small farm in the hills of Valpolicella making very small quantities
of the most exquisite wines. Although started in the 1950's it is only since 2011 when Paolo
Creazzi took over the reins that this estate has gone from being 'good' to outstanding. For this
sweet wine the grapes are harvested by hand in late October and pressed at the end of March.
Fermentation takes place in steel tanks, then the wine rests for five years first in big oak barrels
and then again in steel tanks until bottling.
Intense and uniquely complex aroma with hints of cherry, sweet spices and rose petal.
